Sub Urban Mystic is an integration of parallel art, philosophy and design practice, achieved by focussing on social connectivity and questioning the primacy of singular authorship.

The central works of Sub Urban Mystic are the series of large biomorphic and geomorphic paintings. These paintings or wall hangings expand and amplify drawings made by Suzanne Howard (1962-2018). Suzanne was my partner in life and art for 21 years we began the Weekend Immendorff project in 2013. Her original drawings were made between 2015 and 2018. I consider Suzanne’s drawings as instructions, from her, on how to connect my body directly with my practice. I also considered them spiritual portals or gateways to the spiritual and physical realms.

Sub Urban Mystic incorporates ceramic works by Meanjin artists Bridie Gillman and Queena Grot. During the lead up to installation, I visited Bridie and Queena Grot in their studios to discuss their ceramics and the ideas of the exhibition and to engage in what we have called “clay and conversation”.

The inclusion of biographical furnishings in the installation and the elimination of officious barriers emphasise the importance of the domestic as a shared intimate space for the visitors reflection and safety.

David M Thomas is an artist/educator/performer and is self represented. Thomas has an ongoing involvement with artist organised exhibition projects and performance groups. Since the 1990’s he has organised exhibitions, events performances and galleries. The Sub Urban Mystic project will mark a significant extension and development of Thomas’ overall practice towards a more sophisticated integration of parallel, philosophical, exhibition/design methodologies.
